I worked for the Rockford, Illinois NBC affiliate WREX-TV from 1997-2003. Between working as a Master Control Operator and later as Information Systems Administrator, I took charge of the production aspects of their community affairs program "13 Cares", deveoping not only new graphics but a promotional campaign for the show.

1999 Disclaimer

 In 1999, WREX's corporate parent asked that "13 Cares" include a disclaimer, which was originally two static pages. As my first project for the show, I remade the disclaimer to type out the words as they were read, to make it slightly more interesting.

 When I began working on "13 Cares", it was still using the brushed steel station logos created in 1996, which no longer matched the chrome logo introduced in 1999. This prompted me to remake and tweak the graphics, resulting in the "13 Cares 2000" package. This contains the elements used to create show opens and topical promos.

 This spot kicked off a promotional campaign for "13 Cares" which I had lobbied for since the end of 1999. It was designed to run alternately with a topical promo discussing the coming week's show. It's also the first promo I produced.

 I was very pleased with the flexibility and simplicity of the new promotional format, because it allowed the guests rather than the host to sell the show. This update of the POP, which contains the most humor of the lot, reflects community advocacy, local politics, and local business interest.

 Many local news programs will integrate a short promotional segment which introduces the members of the news team at the start of the first commercial break. This is often called a "Backdoor Open". For the "13 Cares 2003" graphics package, I decided to include the otherwise frumpy disclaimer with a display of the show's awards and a standard talent introduction. The result was slick, fast-paced, and a statement that the show was taken seriously.

 In December 1999 I was assigned to take a tape of greetings sent home from our armed forces and cull our "hometown heroes" into spots we could air during the holiday season. These five spots represented the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area.

 Each broadcast day at WREX begins at 4:00am. When the station signs off the night before, the morning begins with a sign on. This "Mini Sign-On" ran Tuesday-Saturday when the station is on the air 24 hours, both as a legal station identification and also "interrupt" any overnight show that was running late.
